(Cars) Permanent linkThe National Insurance Crime Bureau recently unveiled a database of vehicles that were stolen, but not recovered, or declared totaled by insurers. And you can search it for free! Unlike commercial databases that sell similar information, the crime bureau has access to the internal records of hundreds of the nation's largest insurance companies. In the last five years, nearly 12 million vehicles have been totaled by the insurance industry, most of them after collisions, but also after fires and floods, reports the Los Angeles Times. Experts say about 30 percent of those cars end up back on the market. That’s why you should always have a qualified, independent mechanic inspect a used car before you buy. While you’re doing your research, check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Web site to be sure the car you’re considering wasn’t recalled. Posted by Kristin Alexander All Consuming Blog Moderator at 01/28/2011 04:59:27 PM | Hi, I have a boat for sale on craigslist and someone contacted me wanting to trade a 1968 Plymouth Fury (Red) for my boat. Something seems a little fishy about it. I do not have a VIN # but was hoping you could see if there may be a stolen car similar to this in my area. I live in Atlanta, GA. Thank you,
Billy Rieber [BLOG MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: Billy, I don't have any way of knowing whether the person you are dealing with is legit. Unless, of course, you were asked to send money -- which is always a sign of a scam. If concerned, I suggest you contact your local police department. Of course, it's always wise to be cautious when dealing online. Deal locally and do your homework prior to purchasing a used car.] Posted by: Billy Rieber ( Email ) at 7/9/2009 6:55 AM

This is interesting to know...I remember a few years back I bought a second hand car and the suspension failed and when I went to get the car repaired my mechanic said that my suspension was unuasually rusty... I found this a little bit weird considering the care was only 1 year old and the car salesman had said it had been cared for by it's owner. Then i was telling my friend the story and he actually knew someone who had access to these tyes of databases. And I found out that the car had been stolen and found with the bonnet ditched in a creek. It was never returned to the owner and then ended up in a use car yard when I ended up buying it. So I am glad these registers are available to the public because it helps us all drive safe cars on our roads. Posted by: how to market online ( Email ) at 9/17/2009 1:21 AM

My new car was stolen and totaled. At the time I did not have insurance and I still owed alot of $ on the car. Is there a way I can sue the theft and have the financial company go after him for the rest of the $ owed? [AGO BLOG MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: Yikes! That's awful. Back in 2005 i help purchased a 2002 ford focus. My credit was used to purchased this vehicle. The person and i are on the registration. For the last past 6 yrs, she has not contributed to car payments and has recently moved with out any notice. I don't have any idea where the vehicle is located. In past 3 yrs I've received 4 traffic citations (red light violations) $75.00. Should i report this car stolen? Should i try to find the other registered owner, but i do believe she is under a new name. Could i even sue her for not contributing to the signed agreement of paying back the loan as scheduled. I do have proof of signed documents during the day of purchase. I am wanting to buy a 2006 Lexus IS250 AWD 4Dr on Craigslist for $2750!!! The buyer says it is because her son died in the war in Iraq, and she doesn't want to look at it anymore. She says the car is in a crate and ready to ship. I don't have anything but her email and she says I'd have to send the money to ebay and not her. Could this be a scam? Where can I find out if this is a stolen car or not? [ALL CONSUMING MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: This sounds like a scam. You should ask for the VIN number, license plate number, make, model and year of the car. You can use the website mentioned in this post to see if the car is stolen. You may also want to check that information with your local police. When buying a car it a good idea to physically look at it and have it inspected. Finally, you might check with your insurance company.] Posted by: Vanessa Umanzor ( Email ) at 1/15/2012 8:00 PM

To Rafael and anybody who may consider buying a car with a Salvage Title:
It's not unheard of to buy a junk car and swap the components that have a VIN into a stolen car so it looks legitimate. A car that has truly been totaled is worth less once repaired than it would cost to repair it, so a totaled car is only worth buying for the parts that are still good. It would be very strange to fix and sell such a car unless it was a classic car. If somebody is selling you a "totaled" car to drive - not for parts - you should be very skeptical. There are hidden VINs known to law enforcement that likely reveal the car to be stolen. When they do, you are on the hook. You lose the car which returns to its rightful owner, and chances are you will not find the seller to get your money back. Posted by: greg ( Email ) at 11/29/2012 3:53 PM

My husband just got a truck on 1-31-13 and while it was in the shop we found out it was stolen. We did everything we were suppose to do so we wouldn't get in trouble. The investigator told us the it belonged to the insurance company. We want to try and buy it back but we dont know which company it is.How do we find out which one it is. [ALL CONSUMING MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: Generally while there is an open investigation the police will not release information regarding the truck. Once the investigation is over however, you should be able to get that information and contact the owner if you are still interested in purchasing the truck. In the meantime, if you financed the truck you should contact your finance company and inform them of the situation and the contract should be unwound once a copy of the police report is received. Also you should contact your insurance company to inform them of the situation and have the truck removed from your policy.] Posted by: Serena ( Email ) at 3/3/2013 12:20 PM
