(Internet Safety, Product Safety, Credit and Money Matters) Permanent link

shopper2Happy Thanksgiving! If you're one of the 134 million Americans expected to take advantage of Black Friday discounts, take along this holiday shopping list -- Attorney General Rob McKenna' top 10 tips.

“You’ll have yourself a merrier little Christmas if you don’t wait on rebates, read the fine print on return policies, and follow a few other common-sense suggestions,” McKenna said.

Here's his checklist.

  1. Bring ads with you to the store.
  2. Treat gift cards like cash.
  3. Don’t wait on rebates.
  4. Know the retailer’s return policy before you buy.
  5. Keep receipts and packaging.
  6. Save warranties and service agreements.
  7. Be timely with returns.
  8. Check recall notices before buying children’s products.
  9. Check video game ratings.
  10. Do online shopping on secure Web sites.

Great advice that is useful year-round, not just on 'Black Friday.'

Be sure to mail in your rebates as soon as you get home. They are easy to forget about if you put them off. If you wait too long it's like giving away free money.

Plus, nothing puts a smile on your face more than when you get those checks in the mail a few weeks later.
