Three-digit and WaMu phone phishing scam

Three-digit and WaMu phone phishing scam

(Scams) Permanent link

Anyone else get a call from a three-digit number today? I know of at least three of us at the Attorney General's Office who received strange calls on our personal cell phones.

An attorney answered a call this morning from "801" and heard a recorded message. The message said WaMu was calling to advise him that the bank had locked down his credit card, and to press 1 to be connected to the security department. No doubt a phishing attempt from a stupid scammer who doesn't realize that 1) the attorney doesn't have a WaMu card and 2) WaMu is now Chase.

Another co-worker received a call from "801" but didn't answer. My phone received a call from "109" at 1:16 p.m. today but I also didn't pick up. We have different service providers.

[UPDATE -- 3/9/11]:

More phishing robocalls reported today -- all mentioning WaMu accounts -- but some showing seven-digit numbers. One of our attorneys pressed "1" and received an identical recording asking him to press "1" to reactive the card. Curious, he did so and the recording asked for his 16-digit account number. "I hung up at that point," he said. "The recorded voices sounded like they were robotic voice emulations.  Good ones, but still not actual human voices."

Seven-digit numbers look more convincing. But if they're still posing as WaMu, those crooks aren't so savvy.

[UPDATE - 3/11/11]:

Many of you are writing and calling to report that you've received the same annoying calls, sometimes in the middle of the night. Just to manage expectations, my goal is to prevent you from being scammed. Our office doesn't have the authority to initiate a criminal investigation or prosecution. When it comes to tracking down and busting criminal fraudsters and those operating across state and national borders, federal enforcement agencies take the reigns. You can report call scams to the Federal Trade Commission.

I got that call last Saturday! :D

I have not been getting 3-digit, however I would like to report that I get calls on my cell phone more than once a day from "weird" area codes. I live in the Seattle area, and do not know anyone outside the area. I have listed the various numbers I have received calls from since Oct.
[BLOG MODERATOR'S NOTE: Char -- I removed your list of phone numbers due to the length and the fact that I don't know who they belong to, and therefore don't want to inadvertently accuse anyone of illegal activity. You can report illegal telemarketing calls to the FTC at www.donotcall.gov, if applicable.]
Posted by: Char ( Email ) at 2/25/2011 1:34 PM

I don't know who they are either. That is why I gave the numbers to you. I do not think that the calls are randomly misdialed. The area codes are the same, with different numbers, and it happens more than once a day. And computer generated telephone soliciting IS against WA State Law, so they ARE doing something illegal. [MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: Thanks for the clarification, you didn't mention robocalls in your earlier message. Please consider filing a complaint with the FTC and our office. Click on "consumer complaint" in the upper right corner. Comments made to the All Consuming blog are not processed as formal complaints and are not mediated. Thx.]

Thanks for your assistance in directing me who to contact. Now I and others receiving these types of calls can consider filing a complaint.

I got this call two times this week, I returned the call hoping to get a live person but no avail. I hope to god I am not hit with some obscene long distance charge to say some slime infested hovel in Venezuela. Also my phone on the recent inbound list stated the caller was Astiro. Hope this helps.

I received one of the WAMU calls today at 11am and the whole 10 digit number popped up not just a 3 digit number. After hearing a couple lines of the automated message, I hung up.

I received this call yesterday from 1-555-555-5555 and now I have received 3 times already and its only 8:04 am. Mine is a computerized female voice as well.

FYI, this does seem to be happening nationally - I got directed here from someone who I told about this happening to me. That being said, the reputed bank wasn't WaMu (it was a MD-area credit union) and they used a 10-digit number (678 area code). I also don't reside in WA, but I suspect whomever(s) is/are behind this are hitting nationally. [ALL CONSUMING MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: I'm sure you're right, Scott. - Kristin]

They hit my cell phone at 12:41am today (3/10/11). As soon as they said Washington Mutual, I hung up. The number showing they used was 203-322-9876. I also reported it to my cell phone carrier.

Mine came from a 6-digit phone number - 999-201. Robocall, also WaMu.

Received a call from a four digit number last week claiming to be Microsoft. Of course they let me know my computer was infected with a virus from overseas. They wanted me to get on line and log into a site so they could "fix" my hard drive. English seemed to be a slight issue, so I asked for ID and call back numbers. He supplied numbers, I call Microsoft, they said SCAM don't do it. These people were persistent, They called back until I answered and let them know that Microsoft did not have anything to do with the scam. They quit calling?
Posted by: Scott ( Email ) at 3/13/2011 1:53 PM

I received a call on March 9th from 999-201. Call appears in my missed call list as being from an 'asteriso', there is no such notation in my call back list so no idea how this name popped up. Didn't answer and when I tried to get more information, accidentally started to call back. Cancelled immediately and sincerely hope to not see any extreme charges on my bill next month.

3/31/11

I received a phone call from 203-322-9876.

A recording "we are sorry to inform you that your debit card has been locked . . ." The name on the called ID is Kurz Gisella. Enter your number and they've got you. What a scam! There should be a way to catch them.

Got called from 555-555-5555. Automated female voice saying my debit card has been suspended for security reasons. In order to re-instate it, you gotta put in your card #, pin, expiration. Called the bank and its a total scam. They called at 5:30 pm fri & 10:45 pm sat. scary stuff!
Posted by: Gloria ( Email ) at 4/9/2011 8:11 PM

I received a call in the middle of the night and I answered and I didn't catch the bank they named but they asked me about an account and I hung up because do not have and banking or credit account at all whatsoever. I found it strange that my call log on my phone says asteriso while other unknown callers are just numbers, and when I tap on asteriso, it says unknown caller; as if they blocked the number from caller ID.

I am currently in NYC, but am originally from Seattle and have a 206 area code on my cell phone. I've been getting calls from three and four digit numbers - 1202, 213, 219, 1100, 226, 216 - at least once to three times a week, starting in June as far as I can remember. I'm also on the Do Not Call list. [ALL CONSUMING MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: How annoying! Needless to say, scammers ignore Do Not Call -- which was created to regulate legitimate telemarketers.]

I have just started receiving some of these calls from "011." I've missed all of the calls but I'm no stranger to scams of this world. I already changed my phone number which is very inconvenient. I assume it was from one of two websites. They must have give my information to a third party without my authorization.
Posted by: Jill ( Email ) at 8/8/2011 10:41 PM

They called from 999-999-92114 at first.
Female voice left on a message after I ignored the second call. "Unavailable" consecutive numbers. Left message about debit card and pressing 1 to go to the security department. Didn't mention WaPo or Chase.

I received a phone call at 4:53 PM on August 21, 2011 on my cell phone. It was an automated call telling me that my bank card had been put on hold asking me to sellect 1 for further information. I hung up instead. I did a reverse look up on the number left on caller ID. Caller ID showed the number 481-753-08 There is no such area code and there are not enough numbers. Beware looks like a fraud attempt to me.

I got a call this morning from 718-504-1922 regarding my "Wells Fargo debit card", which I do not have. Other details of the script are the same as mentioned above, robotic female voice, press 1 to reach our security department, etc.
Scammers are the worst sub-human dreck.
Posted by: ceci ( Email ) at 9/21/2011 2:23 PM

The robo scammers are going to town. I am curious how they are obtaining phone numbers. Our family has all our phones on the same plan, but one family members (the youngest) is not getting any. The rest of us are now getting several a week. The numbers showing up on my phone are 3 digit - 512 and 618. We reside in Washington. Thank you for the info to file a complaint.

ROBOCALL received 9/24/11...5:37pm...'debit card locked... press 1 for english or 2 for spanish...enter 16 digit card #'...hung up...call records indicate a call form +618.

I'm getting these also, 3 and 4 digit numbers, but this morning I got one from 503 area code which is OR and I was expecting call from OR so I answered, but did not "press 1 to be connected to customer service" for the "problem with my credit card" LOL. It was definitely a robo-call in violation of WA Law.
Posted by: LLBailey ( Email ) at 10/3/2011 9:26 AM

I've gotten these calls before from 3 & 4 digit numbers, but this morning I got one from area code 503 which I thought was OR and I had just emailed an order in to OR and they might have been calling about it so I answered. But it was "courtesy call about credit card" and of course I hung up instead of "press 1 for customer assistance" so it was definitely a robo call in violation of WA Law.

I received a call from 201. Started off last week as once a day, and the last two days it's been three times a day. I always let it go to voice mail. Today I answered it. They asked for me, and wanted to advise me of the upcoming board of directors meeting that I needed to attend for First Federal Bank, and wanted to know if I received the agenda for this meeting in the mail yet. I knew immediately it was a scam, but played along and said I had not received it. They said I could place my vote verbally over the phone to authorize the transfer of funds. I told them not to call me again, and hung up the phone.

They called me today as well from this number
206 888 6592 Regarding a WaMu gift card. I asked her who gave her my number and she immediately hung up the phone? Im not sure who this people are but they need to stop inviting our privacy, and should understand that to uses any ones else's phone number for their own business use or fraud, with out the permission of the customer of victim is a gains the law.

I received the same call about five minutes ago. The only numbers that showed up was 301 and nothing else. This number has been calling me all week. So, finally I decided to answer and it was a man with an extremely heavy accent of some sort. He claimed that the government was going to give me $7,000, completely tax free, and I won't ever have to pay it back. He then continued to tell me that it was because I've never filed bankruptcy, I have never been convicted of a felony, and because I pay my bills on time. Then there was something about a demographic survey of some sort. I politely, and I do have to stress politely, told him that I was not interested. He started to raise his voice and gave me the whole spill all over again. I told him once more that I was not interested. He started to shout at me saying, "It's free money, right?! Why wouldn't you want it?!" I told him that I don't believe in free money from suspicious characters who call from numbers that I cannot trace, cause I refuse to get bit in the ass for other people's scams, then I hung up on him as he started to shout his spill all over again. After that, I received about four more calls, until finally it stopped.

I get a three digit, constant day and night phone calls from a number 201, even when I am at work. It just won't stop.
I never answer it, but they keep coming several times a day. Then I get at text that I won a $1000 gift card from Best Buy, it came up as a bad virus. People are cruel.

I receive Unknown and three-digit phone calls at least once a day and have for a while. They occur at any hour. Some of the three-digit numbers within the past couple weeks have been 205, 202, 214, and 107. I usually don't answer. They never leave a voicemail. The time I did answer they said nothing and just hungup. When attempting to call the number back, it rings once or twice and says "The verizon phone you are trying to reach is unavailable blah blah...". I am in Virginia and using a verizon cell phone. If anyone knows of any scams, please let me know. These constant unknown and three-digit calls are really starting to worry me...
Posted by: Liz ( Email ) at 4/30/2012 6:48 PM

After reading all the posts, it makes sense. Previously, I received ten-digit calls with various area codes (many of them matching some of the previous posts such as 712 or 702) or coming up unknown or private. There were many calls trying to get me to sign up for higher education programs and trip deals. Now, since I answered these calls, I'm getting three-digit calls with similar numbers as before because they can now mask their identity and caller ID. The question is, why are the three-digit numbers hanging up when I answer and if I call back saying the Verizon number is unavailable or no longer in service? When, if I answered or called the ten-digit numbers back, I usually got a person who talked to me instead of just hanging up. Yet, I am still getting three-digit phone calls daily. Why doesn't this add up?
Posted by: Liz ( Email ) at 4/30/2012 9:01 PM

I keep receiving calls from 229-49 and similar phone numbers. They're automated and asking for personal info regarding bank account info. I'm also on the do not call list; it doesn't seem to work. Why don't we have a spam or some kind of button that we can press on our cell phones to automatically report/filter out these calls?
Posted by: Trish ( Email ) at 5/11/2012 5:38 AM

I recieved a call this morning from a strange number, it appeared to be local so I answered it. No one said anything on the other line, they just hung up. I called it back and it had already been disconnected. I was about to buy an animal from someone online and when I was about to pick it up they went "into the hospital" and they wanted to fly it out for 450.00. Well, they already had my cell number, the city I live in, my name...and having been in the military, call me paranoid...I've taken the battery out of my phone just in case they are tying to locate where I live...I hate society we live in these days .

Got a call on my cell phone from 216 after 10:00PM at night. I didn't pick it up then called my voicemail to see if 216 left a message.. they did but it was a robot and only a partial message which I didn't bother to listen to- I don't have time for this Nigerian nonsense.

I got a call whose ID was "547" today 03/04/13. The man's English was so difficult I had to ask him several times to repeat; he purported to be a tech from Microsoft and told me my computer has a virus. When I finally ascertained what he was trying to tell me I said something uncomplimentary to him, and hung up.

Received a call at around 9pm last night from an "Unknown" id on my iPhone caller id - the call had a robotic voice telling me my credit has been shut down or is about shut down and this was the secruity division. That I should press 1 to activate it again. I pressed 1 to see where this was going, it stated that I needed to enter my 16 digit "credit" number. I hung up. No bank or credit card company ID'd just a random credit security division.

Obviously a scam. I know for a fact Citibank and Chase call you with an operator, BofA will call you or shit down your account with an email or push notification in similar situations.

I keep getting called by an "invalid" number! 333-221. That's the # that shows up on my caller ID. Very frustrating and no way to block sender. I have called back only to get a recording that I tried to make a call with an invalid number. I cant call them so how can they call me? It is because of their number that makes me now so worried about what they have in mind for me. It can't be good news that's for sure. I probably shouldn't have tried to contact them. I am afraid also to answer the phone when I see it is that 6 digit number. By doing so could it trigger some sort of chain reaction? I don't want to open the flood gates of god knows what . HELP ! Make them stop! [ALL CONSUMING MODERATOR'S RESPONSE: Phishing phone calls should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. You can report these calls by calling (888) 382-1222. We recommend that consumers do not answer or return these types of calls as it can confirm that the Phisher has a working number and may generate additional calls. While driving home from work the other day, I got a call from '199'. Didn't answer because I was driving and there was a police cruiser close by. I've received strange calls on my cell before, but I hadn't seen any that strange since international scammers failed to get my personal info almost 2 years ago. This weird number left a 1 second silent message. I'm assuming it's a couple of scammers with nothing better to do.

I received a call from a 3 digit number, it was 951. How can I report the number, if it won't allow you to enter in 3 digit numbers?!

Wow. I just got a call from these guys ("901") it is 11:31 PM here, they were talking so fast I could hardly understand them. I don't have a bank account or a credit card or ANYTHING for them to get at! lol

I received a call from the three digit #847 today. They didn't leave a message. Not sure if it's a scammer or what.

Got a call from "847" today. Couldn't understand the whole automated message but it said that something had been locked and wanted me to press 1. I hung up at that point. Anyone else seen 847 recently?

I just got a call from this "847" as well. The automated message sounded like something you'd type in google's text-to-speach feature (very robotic, definitely not a recording of a real person). It mentioned something that sounded like being from "mets" but it wasn't clear. It said my account has been locked and asked me to press "1" to either speak to someone or get this cleared up. Don't remember exactly. I just hung up but what should you do if you get something like this?

I also got a call from 847. My phone went off at 1 am and when it wanted my card number I decided to put random numbers in for the hell of it. After 7 random numbers it ended the call. I'm located in Portland, Oregon if that makes a difference.

I received a call at 6:28 this morning from "847". I didn't answer, but my guess... it was most likely a scam.
