Saluting J.P. Patches and Gertrude

(AGO) Permanent link

As you may have heard, J.P. Patches makes his final public appearance in Seattle on Saturday. We salute and thank you, J.P., for decades of laughs.

JPpatchesAnd on the subject, here's a photo of our Policy Director, Chris Johnson, hanging around with those clowns at the Capitol.

Just wanted to tell you what Julius Pierpont Patches measnt to me.....I remember, when I was littl, and before I could tell time, trying to get my dad up so I could watch seems I was always about an hour early.....and racing home, when I was older, ro watch him in the afternoon....always disappointed he was only on once on Sat, and I don't think he was on at all on Sunday. I was on the show twice, and yes, it made me feel like a movie star....I had an autographed photo of JP and Gertrude, and lost it in a house fire....was one of my most prized possesions. Can't tell you what was diiferent about JP...just loved him. Hated Captain Kangaroo, my mom like Stan Boreson more than I did, and watched Captn Puget, and Brakeman Bill, but they werejust okay. Liked WundaWunda, but she didn't stay on for a long time. And liked Romper Room. But LOVED JP Patches. He just had something different, and didn't talk down to us kids.. he was, and always, will be thebest. And he couldn't have a better girlfriend than Gertrude. Missed his last appearance, as I worked, but drove down there like a madwoman, hoping he was still there, but missed him. We will always love JP Patches, who helped form our future. Don't think even he knows how much he really means to us babyboomers. Take care, JP...we love you
