Attorney General warns to be wary of scams to follow

SEATTLE — Neiman Marcus, a luxury specialty department store, has announced a payment card data breach. The store announced some of its customers’ payment cards were fraudulently used after making purchases at its stores.

Social security numbers and birth dates do not appear to have been compromised. Personal identification numbers (PIN) were never at risk because Neiman Marcus doesn’t use PIN pads in their stores. Customers who shopped online do not appear to have been impacted.

Neiman Marcus will send an email offering free credit card monitoring and ID theft insurance to all of their customers who shopped with them in their stores or online during the last year. Sign up instructions are provided on Neiman Marcus’ website.

Credit monitoring services help consumers keep tabs on their credit reports. They track consumers’ credit reports and immediately send an alert if any changes or suspicious activities occur. The services typically cost $10 to $15 per month.

The store reminds customers if they used Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover or the Neiman Marcus card they have zero liability for unauthorized charges if they are reported in a timely manner.

If you discover fraudulent activity on your credit card statement, call your card issuer immediately to report it. If fraudulent activity occurs on your Neiman Marcus Card, call its credit division at 1.800.685.6695.

Beware of Neiman Marcus credit monitoring phishing scams to follow

The Washington State Attorney General’s Office warns consumers to be on high alert for email scams that appear as if they originate from Neiman Marcus but are actually fraudsters trying to obtain personal information.

Do not give out personal information to someone who contacts you before going directly to Neiman Marcus’ website to confirm the presented information is correct.
