Washington State

Office of the Attorney General

Attorney General

Bob Ferguson

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SEATTLE — Washington consumers should file complaints with the Washington State Attorney General’s Office if they believe they were harmed by the online marketing company, Internet Order LLC, which operates the website www.pimsleurapproach.com.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced in August that his office had reached a $1 million resolution with Internet Order as the result of a lawsuit that was filed in September 2014 by the office’s Consumer Protection Division. This resolution was made in conjunction with the Attorneys General of Pennsylvania and New York, who also received complaints about the company.

Internet Order was accused of using "negative option" marketing in the sale of Pimsleur-branded language audio courses. Consumers who did not proactively cancel the transaction after an initial purchase were at risk for potentially being charged hundreds of dollars.

The agreement provides for a claims process for consumers who believe they were harmed by Internet Order to seek restitution.

On October 26, 2015, the claims processor, Dahl Administration, will be sending emails to consumers who purchased language CDs from Internet Order between January 1, 2009 and April 1, 2013, and who unsuccessfully attempted to cancel within 45 days of the expiration of the “free trial” period. The email will include a link to a claim form with more directions on how to obtain a possible refund.

All other Washington state consumers who believe they were harmed by Internet Order’s negative option marketing scheme are encouraged to file a written complaint before October 31, 2015 with the Washington Attorney General’s Office at www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint to be considered for a possible refund
