Working together to keep families safe
Attorney General Rob McKenna has made fighting domestic violence against men and women in Washington a priority in his administration. Building on the office's strong history with the domestic violence community and its expert domestic violence resource team, the Attorney General's Office (AGO) is committed to protecting families against domestic violence on several fronts.
McKenna's commitment to domestic violence issues reaches back to his time on the King County Council, where he led the council in supporting a pledge created by the Seattle-based Men’s Network Against Domestic Violence, urging men to work on ending the cycle of domestic violence. The goal of the Men’s Network Against Domestic Violence is to encourage men who are not abusers to start speaking out about the cycle of abuse and the role men have in creating attitudes that can cause violence against women to occur. The pledge can be downloaded from http://www.menagainstdv.org/pledge/ .
He was honored in 2006 with the Eastside Domestic Violence Coalition's "Outstanding Leader Award" for his work in this area.
Attorney General McKenna has convened an advisory group of domestic violence prevention professionals to address this issue and the office has passed two domestic violence bills in the 2007 and 2008 sessions.
The Attorney General's Office has a strong history in addressing the problem of domestic violence, including development of comprehensive training materials to help law enforcement handle domestic violence among its ranks.
 | In October 2008, the Attorney General's Office urges communities to join the fight against domestic violence by participating in "Purple Light Nights." Shine a purple light on every front porch Hang a string of purple lights in every business window Decorate each downtown street tree with purple lights Send the message that “Domestic Violence Has NO Place In Our Community”.
Purple Light Nights™ strives to increase the awareness of domestic violence issues and their effect upon children and families. Join neighborhoods and cities across our state during Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October and participate in Purple Light Nights™. Visit their Web site for templates and instructions on how to start a campaign in your community. |
