The Washington State University Division is comprised of 5 attorneys and 4 professional staff. The Pullman-based division provides legal services to the state’s land grant university. WSU is a complex client with campuses in Pullman, Spokane, the Tri-Cities, and Vancouver; agricultural research operations statewide; and extension field offices in every county in the state. WSU enrolls approximately 23,000 students and has over 7,300 employees.

Division attorneys provide advice and representation on a host of legal issues, many of which are unique to an academic environment, including issues relating to: real estate; university research; intellectual property; the university’s statewide Extension operations (including 4-H programs in the state of Washington); intercollegiate athletics ; student affairs; personnel and employment law; university development/fund-raising; taxation; constitutional law; public contracting; animal law and other matters related to the college of veterinary medicine; and construction. Division attorneys also provide representation on non-tort related litigation in a variety of forums.

Recently, division attorneys assisted in representing the university’s interests in two pending pieces of litigation involving water rights. Other work of note included: assisting the university with a complete revision to both its code of student conduct and its facilities use rules; assisting with a number of research misconduct proceedings; and providing training, advising on numerous complex personnel matters, and assistance on a number of topics, including electronic data discovery.
