The Washington State Attorney General’s Office won a major arbitration decision today in the continuing effort to enforce the $206 billion, 25-year Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement (MSA). The decision means $14.8 million in withheld tobacco settlement funds from 2003 will come to Washington.

The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) held its summer meeting in Seattle this week. On Wednesday, officials presented awards to members of McKenna’s Solicitor General’s Office and to his chief deputy.

GRAND MOUND – Teens from all over the state gathered at Great Wolf Lodge last week to share ideas about reducing drug and alcohol abuse, violence and other destructive behaviors. Among the PowerPoint slides, costumes, singing and role-playing, one theme came up again and again: Prescription drug abuse is a growing, yet hidden, threat to young people.

OLYMPIA -- Attorney General Rob McKenna said Wednesday that Valero, one of the nation’s largest gas station chains, has agreed to implement new procedures to reduce tobacco sales to kids.

 OLYMPIA – Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna congratulated Congress on Wednesday for approving the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act. The new law combats the multi-billion dollar Internet cigarette trade by restricting the mailing of tobacco products.

General Tobacco products can no longer be sold in Washington or 15 other states. The Washington Attorney General’s Office said the company has not made the required payments under the Master Settlement Agreement. Retailers must remove products from their shelves after Feb. 19.

They may have sent Joe Camel the way of the buffalo but that didn’t stop tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. from violating the 10-year-old agreement prohibiting the use of cartoons in tobacco advertising, the Division One Court of Appeals ruled today.
