OLYMPIA…Attorney General Rob McKenna today made the following statement on the Washington State Supreme Court’s decision in Andersen et al. v. King County et al, in which the court upheld Washington’s Defense of Marriage Act.
Radio Actuality: This is a highly emotional day for people on both sides of this case, but I appreciate that the Supreme Court’s decision reflects its respect for the policy-making role of the Legislature and they ruled on law not on emotion. (12.4 seconds)
In passing the Defense of Marriage Act in 1998, the Legislature overturned a gubernatorial veto with a two-thirds, bipartisan vote. The Attorney General’s Office is charged with defending, when challenged, all the laws of the state of Washington.
