Attorney General

Washington auto dealers need to pick their business partners carefully. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division today announced our third settlement in recent months involving car advertisements. We’re seeing an increase in out-of-state firms  who don’t understand state laws marketing new and used cars for local dealerships.

Just as there are rules of the road, there are rules for car advertising. Both dealers and ad firms can be sued and fined if their promotions are misleading and fail to include all legally required disclosures.

The Attorney General’s Office has created a Web page at www.atg.wa.gov/dealers.aspx with tips to help dealers comply with advertising laws. We’ll be adding helpful graphics and links to additional resources, as well.

Washington dealers must accept responsibility to assure that marketing firms they hire understand our state laws.
