Attorney General Rob McKenna today warned consumers to beware of possible flood-related scams including fraudulent home repair offers, phony charity pitches and cons posing as government officials. As sick as it may seem, cons like to prey on disaster situations. Washington residentsRob and Sam are generous folks. KOMO's effort to collect food, clothing and money for victims ended Wednesday after eight trailer loads were collected from thousands of people who stopped by the Renton IKEA to donate. Wow! If you want to help, donate directly to a familiar organization such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

To help you know where your dollars are going, the Secretary of State’s Office today released its annual report on paid fundraisers who solicit donations on behalf of charities. Our office and the Secretary of State have teamed up with AARP on a campaign called "Operation Check Before You Give. “ McKenna and Secretary of State Sam Reed joined AARP volunteer Fraud Fighters today in contacting consumers to provide tips about wise charitable giving.
