Are you getting more phone calls and mailings about donating to charities? Today’s News Tribune has a good reminder for anyone, especially seniors, considering where to donate. You should always ask how much of the donation goes for the charitable purpose and how much will be spent on other stuff, like marketing and office supplies. Some less than charitable fundraisers keep most of the cash for themselves. Start your research with the Secretary of State’s Charities Program, where you can verify registration status or ask questions about a charity or its paid solicitor. Search online or call 1-800-332-4483. Other resources include the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance, American Institute of Philanthropy and GuideStar.
