Do those grocery “rewards” cars actually save you money? KING 5’s Tim Robinson visited QFC, Metropolitan Market and Safeway in Seattle and bought the same eight items at each store – chicken, spaghetti sauce, pasta, milk, eggs, bread, pizza and soda.

Shoppers do save when they use those cards. Still, the results surprised the news crew and us. Metropolitan Market came in lowest by a few cents. The store doesn’t use a savings card and is known for its gourmet goodies.

  • QFC: $34.98 with the Advantage Card, $39.36 without. Savings of $4.38.
  • Safeway: $32 with the Club Card, $36.48 without. Savings of $4.48.
  • Metropolitan Market: $31.66.

The story doesn’t mention which brands were purchased.Watch the report here.
