As we’ve mentioned on All Consuming, TV is going digital. Starting in February, you’ll need a converter box to watch your favorite programs via an antenna or rabbit ears. The government is offering coupons to help you buy one.

But an Ohio-based company called Universal TechTronics is running misleading ads promising a free a digital converter box. The Better Business Bureau issued a warning that the converter really isn’t free at all. In fact, you have to buy a 5-year warranty for $59 plus shipping and handling fees; bringing the total cost of the box to nearly $100. If you use your $40 government coupon elsewhere, you’ll pay only about $20.

To request a coupon, apply online at www.dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). Here’s a list of places to buy a converter box. You may also need a new antennae. The City of Seattle's Web site is a great resource to answer your questions.

Remember, you don’t have to do anything if your TV is connected to cable or satellite.
