The Better Business Bureau alerted consumers today to a  telemarketing scam in which cons claiming affiliatiation with “American Standard Financial” promise to provide a student grant in return for a payment. The scammers appear to be calling from Bellevue but probably are operating from overseas. They ask for a checking account number.

Remember to never provide a bank account number to any unsolicited caller. Legitimate student loan providers don’t ask for this kind of information over the phone. Shopping online for loans carries a number of risks. You should only deal with reputable companies. Be sure to check the Washington Department of Financial Institutions' Licensee Database to see if a lender or broker is eligible to work in Washington.
