Want to know which new car is "greenest" or will really drive down your cost at the pump? The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation unveiled the next generation of fuel economy stickers required for new cars and trucks starting with 2013 models. Automakers also have the option to start using the labels for 2012 models.

The revised decals – the most extensive overhaul in 30 years – are intended to show buyers how a vehicle compares to others in its class. In addition to miles per gallon, the labels will show, on a scale of 1 to 10, how a vehicle stacks up against competitors for smog, tailpipe emissions and fuel economy. They will also display the amount of fuel needed to go 100 miles and the expected cost of fuel over the next five years compared with the average new vehicles.

Shoppers will also be able to scan labels with a smartphone to get information about each vehicle.
