Good news for consumers who need to protect themselves from identity theft. TransUnion announced last week that it will allow consumers nationwide the ability to freeze access to their credit reports starting Oct. 15. Equifax said it plans to follow suit.

security freeze is the strongest tool consumers have to prevent identity thieves from opening new credit, wrecking their finances. Under legislation I proposed, consumers will be able to freeze their credit histories with the three major bureaus, including Experian, starting next year. Identity theft and data breach victims can request a security freeze now. We’ve posted more info on our Web site at www.atg.wa.gov/credit-freeze-fraud-alerts.
