The Department of Revenue has launched a new Web site, www.suspectfraud.com, as part of a campaign to help prevent consumer fraud and give people an easy way to check if a business is registered.

National Consumer Protection WeekUnregistered businesses cost Washington approximately $457 million annually and the department estimates there may be as many as 165,000 of them in the state. And if a business isn’t paying its taxes or going through the steps to be properly licensed, who knows whether its creators have the right experience to do the job?
Links on www.suspectfraud.com allow consumers to check whether businesses are registered and licensed with the state and to report them if they are not. Consumers also can check to see if a registered business owes the state taxes, has had complaints filed against it, or is the subject of state enforcement actions.

The site includes links to report insurance scams, consumer complaints, investment schemes, moving company violations, unregistered contractors and other types of fraud.
