FBI-SOS: Safe Online Surfing

The FBI-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) Internet Challenge is a FREE, educational, online program that teaches elementary and middle school students how to recognize and react to online dangers. Developed collaboratively by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the academic community and corporate America, the Internet safety program helps keep students safe online by arming them with important information to help protect themselves from Internet Predators.

Objectives

After completing the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge, students will be able to:

  • Define important terms associated with online safety
  • Recognize and identify the "red flags" that indicate that they may be chatting with an online predator
  • Describe at least three ways to protect their privacy when online
  • Identify ways to decrease risks associated with social networking sites and chat rooms
  • Recognize and report illegal online behaviors and become familiar with CyberTipline, a mechanism for reporting online crimes

How It Works

Each month, elementary and middle schools across the country participate in the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge and compete for the FBI-SOS Trophy. A teacher of administrator can register their school at www.fbi-sos.org. Students begin by taking an online self-scoring Pre-Quiz to measure their knowledge of Internet safety and the complete an online Scavenger Hunt where they learn important Internet Safety information. Students are then ready to take the Post-Quiz. Quiz questions are based on the safety information found during the Scavenger Hunt. The school that has the highest combined student scores on the Post-Quiz wins the FBI-SOS Trophy and a visit from an FBI Agent.

The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge starts over each month so not all students from a school have to compete in the same month. This s a free program -- all you need is an Internet connection and a browser.

Benefits

  • Students will gain practical information, safety tips and resources to help themselves and their privacy while online
  • Top performing students will receive certificates and win fun prizes
  • The winning schools will receive the FBI-SOS Trophy and a visit from an FBI Special Agent

The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge is administered by the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation at Nova Southeastern University's Fischler School of Education and Human Services. The Internet safety program is implemented each school year with the support of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), teachers and school administrators across the country and generous sponsors including the Miama Dolphins, Time Warner Telecom and the Enlightenment Foundation.
