OLYMPIA – Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna congratulated Congress on Wednesday for approving the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act. The new law combats the multi-billion dollar Internet cigarette trade by restricting the mailing of tobacco products.

General Tobacco products can no longer be sold in Washington or 15 other states. The Washington Attorney General’s Office said the company has not made the required payments under the Master Settlement Agreement. Retailers must remove products from their shelves after Feb. 19.

They may have sent Joe Camel the way of the buffalo but that didn’t stop tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. from violating the 10-year-old agreement prohibiting the use of cartoons in tobacco advertising, the Division One Court of Appeals ruled today.

OLYMPIA – The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), yesterday elected Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna as its vice president. McKenna will serve in this role through next summer, when he will become president-elect of the organization. He’ll assume the role of NAAG president in 2011.

Seattle – Attorney General Rob McKenna today announced an agreement with Kroger Co., the nation’s largest grocery chain. Under the agreement, Kroger will implement comprehensive youth prevention practices to reduce the sale of tobacco products to minors at its 128 Washington locations operating under the QFC and Fred Meyer banners.

OLYMPIA — Attorney General Rob McKenna announced today that the state of Washington received $1.1 million from a $55.4 million national settlement reached with House of Prince A/S and Scandinavian Tobacco, S.I.A. to resolve a dispute over enforcement of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), under which tobacco companies reimburse the states for the health care costs of tobacco-related diseases.
