Other LanguagesOLYMPIA - Attorney General Rob McKenna has promoted Chief Criminal Prosecutor Brian Moran from the Seattle Criminal Justice Division to Chief Deputy Attorney General effective August 1.
“Brian Moran is one of the most experienced and respected attorneys in the Attorney General’s Office and one of the top prosecutors in the state,” McKenna said. “His superb legal skills and strong management experience make him an excellent fit for this new leadership role.”
As Chief Criminal Prosecutor for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, Moran and his staff are responsible for assisting the state’s 39 county prosecutors in the prosecution of criminal matters, including conflict-of-interest cases, capital punishment cases, DNA and complex forensic cases, ecology cases and tax fraud matters.
Moran also supervises the attorneys and staff assigned to the Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) unit and the Homicide Investigative Tracking System (HITS) unit of the Attorney General’s office. The SVP unit is responsible for the statewide civil commitment of sexually violent predators – keeping the most violent sex offenders in secure commitment and away from the public. The HITS unit is responsible for tracking crimes of violence and assisting federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
As Chief Deputy, Moran will serve as the Attorney General’s top legal advisor, drive the Attorney General’s office’s legal strategy and manage the Solicitor General’s Office, the Deputy Attorneys General, Division Chiefs and more than 500 other assistant attorneys general.
“Moran was selected for this post for his impeccable legal credentials and expertise in litigation,” McKenna said. “His experience in handling complex and highly contentious cases in an even-handed and skillful manner will help us reach our goal of reducing litigation and saving state tax dollars.”
Moran has prosecuted hundreds of criminal matters and more than 30 homicide cases, including three death penalty cases and numerous high-profile cases.
Prior to joining the Attorney General’s Office in 1999, Moran was a Senior Deputy Prosecutor with the Office of the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney where he prosecuted violent and complex criminal cases. Before that, he was a law clerk and then an associate attorney with The Law Office of Robert D. Reinhard where he defended tort claim actions.
Moran is a 1982 graduate of Middlebury College (dual degrees in Political Science and German) and a 1988 graduate of the University of Puget Sound School of Law. He has served on a number of community committees and boards, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kitsap County, the United Way of Kitsap County and the Washington State Bar Association. He is also an admissions interviewer for Middlebury College.
Moran lives in Port Orchard with his wife of 16 years, Eileen McKain, and daughters Kate and Molly. He succeeds Chief Deputy Craig Wright, McKenna’s first Chief Deputy, who is leaving the office after 18 months to pursue other endeavors and spend more time with his young family.
