Dear Friends,

Thank you for subscribing and following the work of the Attorney General’s Office. My team of 1,600 assistant attorneys general and professional staff work hard every day on your behalf.

This was a huge month. Because September is the ninth month of the year, I will quickly spotlight nine stories from the month of September. Check out the links for more information on each of these victories on behalf of the people.

  1. We defeated Facebook in court — and defended our best-in-the-nation campaign finance transparency law from Facebook’s legal attack.
  2. We secured approximately $500M in resources to fight back against the opioid epidemic, including the fentanyl crisis, achieving full participation from every Washington jurisdiction. See how much your community will receive here.
  3. We unveiled a proposal to defend democracy by saving local journalism.
  4. We defeated another illegal policy launched by the Trump administration – our 53rd legal victory against the Trump administration. This victory protects Washingtonians pocket books and helps combat climate change. You can read all about our 53 legal victories here.
  5. We won another victory for civil rights when the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the legal challenge to Washington’s law banning the practice of “conversion therapy” for youth. Every single major medical organization that has reviewed “conversion therapy” for youth condemns the practice.
  6. Our often unsung work combating health care fraud received much-deserved recognition in the form of a legislative audit showing that my Medicaid fraud team spent $4 million in state funds and recovered $71.8 million — a return on investment for the state of $17.76 for every dollar spent.
  7. We filed a lawsuit against a Seattle business and its owner for preying on new immigrants by making deceptive promises to help them with legal assistance for immigration needs then later abandoning them in courtrooms after charging thousands of dollars. My team will prosecute immigration scammers exploiting families who simply want to live and work in Washington state.
  8. My environmental crimes team secured its third conviction against individuals and businesses violating the Clean Air Act by intentionally removing catalytic converters from diesel trucks.
  9. Our investigation and lawsuit against Providence hospitals spurred a New York Times investigation that is already paying dividends for Washingtonians who were harmed by Providence’s unlawful billing practices.

You can follow the work of our office on social media. We will continue working every day to improve the lives of Washingtonians.

Sincerely,
