AGs warn against potential new passport application rules targeting trans individuals

OLYMPIA — Washington Attorney General Nick Brown today joined a coalition of 12 attorneys general in submitting a comment letter to the U.S. Department of State opposing proposed changes to the passport application process that would prevent transgender individuals from obtaining a passport that matches their gender identity. 

“These discriminatory rules would add confusion and costs for taxpayers merely to satisfy the president’s fixation on dehumanizing an entire class of people,” Brown said.

SAN FRANCISCO – Today, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, presided over by Judge William H. Alsup, granted a Preliminary Injunction in a lawsuit joined by Washington against the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and its Acting Director, Charles Ezell, finding the termination of probationary federal employees illegal because OPM had no authority to order it. 

Washington joins 20 states to protect students against Trump’s dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education

OLYMPIA — Washington state joined a lawsuit with 20 other states to stop the Trump administration from dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. Washington Attorney General Nick Brown said that Trump’s move is illegal and would destroy a critical federal agency that ensures tens of millions of students receive a quality education and critical resources.

On March 11, the Trump administration announced the department would fire approximately 50% of its workforce as part of its goal of a “total shutdown” of the department.
