Joint Statement from AG Brown, Twelve Other Attorneys General: State and Local Law Enforcement Cannot Be Commandeered for Federal Immigration Enforcement

OLYMPIA – Attorney General Nick Brown, along with the attorneys general of California, New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Vermont, today issued a joint statement addressing a memorandum from a Trump political appointee at the U.S. Department of Justice addressing state and local involvement in federal immigration enforcement:

SEATTLE — A federal judge today granted Washington State’s motion for a nationwide temporary restraining order against President Donald Trump’s unconstitutional attempt to deny birthright citizenship to the children of immigrants who will be born in the United States. The judge’s order blocks federal agencies from implementing the president’s executive order on birthright citizenship while the court initially considers the case.

SEATTLE — Attorney General Nick Brown released the following statement today in response to executive actions by the White House that could harm Washingtonians:

“President Trump today signed a host of gravely concerning executive orders that pose significant harm to thousands of Washingtonians. My staff and I are thoroughly assessing these directives on their legal and constitutional merits.

“We have seen only a small number of what is expected to be an onslaught of executive orders, but there is plenty to be concerned about.

OLYMPIA — Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit sided with Attorney General Nick Brown, affirming decisions by a lower court and a jury that found the for-profit operator of the Northwest ICE Processing Center exploited detainee workers and unjustly enriched itself through unlawful labor practices.
