Buying tires is not an easy thing to do. There are many factors to consider when choosing the right ones. When you pick out the tires, there is always a chance they are not going to be suitable for your vehicle. Before you purchase tires, look at the manufacturer's recommendations. This is especially important if you are going to change tire size or construction. Never replace your old tires with new ones that are smaller than the recommended size, because it decreases your weight limit. All the tires on your vehicle should be the same size, speed rating, and construction.

HOW TO READ RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE SIDEWALL

You can find the name of the tire, size, maximum load, maximum inflation, and other valuable information on the sidewall of your tires. There are several specific markings on the sidewall of the tire that indicate tire type. "Ply" is a term for the number of layers the tires have. "R" means the tire is a radial ply and a "P" in front of the tire number indicates it is a passenger car tire. The sidewall also shows the maximum load in pounds and kilograms, as well as the maximum air pressure in psi (pounds per square inch). The Department of Transportation (DOT) grades passenger car tires on three factors: tread wear, traction, and temperature resistance. Check on the sidewall of your tire to see if it is DOT approved. Tires that are not approved cannot legally be run on the road.

Tires also have three grades: A, B, and C with A being the best. Grade is determined by how well they stop on wet pavement and concrete. There are also grades that are represented by the tire's resistance to heat.
