Renton Collections to provide Washingtonians $1.5 million in medical debt relief to settle AGO suit

The debt collection agency Renton Collections Inc. will provide $1.5 million in debt relief to settle a lawsuit by the Attorney General’s Office over the company’s failure to disclose to about 400,000 Washingtonians their right to request crucial information about their medical debt. 
 

AG Brown continues to combat illegal tire-dumping harming salmon populations

Two individuals were scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in Thurston County District Court after the Washington State Attorney General’s Office charged them with allegedly dumping more than a thousand tires in Capitol State Forest.

Tires contain a chemical that can be lethal to salmon, making tire-dumping a unique threat to Washington’s natural resources. This criminal case is the latest in a series of efforts from the AG’s office to combat illegal tire dumping in Washington state. 

AG Brown opposes Northwest Natural Gas Company’s steep rate hikes

On Friday, the Washington State Attorney General’s Office challenged Northwest Natural Gas Company’s (NW Natural) proposed rate increases and urged the Utilities & Transportation Commission (UTC) to reject a settlement agreement that would allow steep rate increases to go forward. NW Natural is a private, for-profit utility company which the state has licensed to operate as a monopoly in southwest Washington. 

CONSUMER ALERT: Investment scams proliferate on Meta platforms

Attorney General Nick Brown today issued an investor alert to warn Washingtonians about the prevalence of fraudulent investment schemes proliferating across Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. 

Scammers are increasingly using deceptive advertisements and “deepfake” technology to lure investors into high-stakes scams to defraud them of their savings. These scams include “pump and dump” scams, confidence scams, and fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes that take advantage of victims to extract as much money from them as possible.

AG Brown successfully protects state energy funding as federal government drops appeal

Attorney General Nick Brown released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) rescinded its unlawful policy capping reimbursement for state energy programs, which would have forced the state to scale back or delay high-impact community programs. On Thursday, DOE agreed to dismiss its appeal, preserving the states’ victory in federal court and bringing the case to a close. 

Two Yakima County men sentenced in ‘Net Nanny’ cases prosecuted by AG’s office

After successful prosecutions by the Attorney General’s Office, Yakima County juries convicted Frederick Thomson and Lucas Noe Martinez of two counts of attempted child rape. Martinez was sentenced to a range of 90 months to life in prison on March 25 and Thomson was sentenced to a range of 48 months to life in prison on Wednesday.
