The Washington State Office of the Attorney General supports veterans, service members, and their families. Our Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance (OMVLA) helps members of the military and veteran community get free civil legal help. Veterans, service members, or their families may get a referral to a legal aid organization or other community resource, self-help information or, in some circumstances, a referral to a pro bono (free) lawyer for up to an hour of legal advice.
If you need legal help, you can submit a request here.
Attorneys and LLLTs can sign up to volunteer here.
We also provide resources to help you understand your legal rights. Our guides, “Your Rights as a Veteran in Washington,” and “Your Rights as a Service Member in Washington” are available online or as PDF downloads.
The Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance conducted a Military and Veteran Civil Legal Needs Survey, with results released in July 2025. The survey found that most veterans, service members, and their families who try to get legal help in Washington are not able to do so. Services provided by OMVLA and the legal community aim to address that access to justice gap.
