FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SEATTLE – Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a criminal case Friday, October 4 against Colville police officer Rex Newport.

The charges are the result of a sexual misconduct investigation by the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office, after receiving a complaint from a citizen in March of 2013. 

The seven charges include: 

  • Burglary in the First Degree with sexual motivation;
  • Unlawful Imprisonment with sexual motivation;
  • Custodial Misconduct in the First Degree (2 counts);
  • False /Misleading Statement to a Public Servant (2 counts); and
  • Official Misconduct.

Two of the charges carry firearms enhancements, four are felonies, and three are gross misdemeanors. 

Newport will be summoned for an initial appearance/arraignment on October 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in Stevens County Superior Court. He remains on administrative leave from his employment with Colville Police Department.

Since the Stevens County Prosecutor’s office worked with Newport on criminal cases, the Attorney General’s Office was asked to handle any charging decisions or prosecution.

Assistant Attorneys General John Hillman and Melanie Tratnik are prosecuting the case.
