FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SEATTLE - Washington consumers who do not wish to receive telemarketing calls can now join the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry, according to Attorney General Christine Gregoire.

"We are pleased that federal agencies are providing this public service, and Congress has provided sufficient funding to make it work," Gregoire said. "This may not be the end of unwanted telemarketing calls, but consumers will finally have some control over the volume of telephone solicitations they receive at home."

Gregoire added that proposed state do-not-call legislation was withdrawn this year based on the understanding that the federal program would go forward.
Consumers can register home and mobile phone numbers with the Federal Trade Commission by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236) from the phone number to be registered. Anyone with an active e-mail address can register online at: DONOTCALL.GOV. There is no cost to register and it will take approximately three months to notice a decrease in telemarketing calls.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will also launch a National Do Not Call Registry on July 1. Any phone numbers registered with the FTC will automatically be included on the FCC's list.
