Gregoire and McKenna to honor law enforcement heroes

Ceremony follows tough year for police and their families

OLYMPIA – The Washington state Law Enforcement Medal of Honor/Peace Officers’ Memorial ceremony will be held in Olympia on Friday. 

Since 1854, more than 290 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in Washington state.  In the last year alone, seven officers lost their lives. Several others were seriously injured.

Governor Chris Gregoire and Attorney General Rob McKenna will award 14 law enforcement officers the Medal of Honor – Washington state’s highest law enforcement award. The medal is given to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice or have displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct.

The following officers will receive medals posthumously:

  • Deputy Stephen Michael Gallagher Jr., Lewis County Sheriff’s Office
  • Officer Timothy Q. Brenton, Seattle Police Department
  • Sergeant Mark J. Renninger, Lakewood Police Department
  • Officer Tina Mae Gail Griswold, Lakewood Police Department 
  • Officer Ronald W. Owens, Lakewood Police Department
  • Officer Gregory J. Richards, Lakewood Police Department
  • Deputy Walter Kent Mundell Jr., Pierce County Sheriff’s Office

The following officers will receive medals for serious injury:

  • Officer Britt Sweeney, Seattle Police Department
  • Deputy William E. Cortani, Jr., Clallam County Sheriff’s Office
  • Sergeant Nicholas J. Hausner, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office

The following officers will receive for meritorious conduct:

  • Sergeant Gary Nelson, Seattle Police Department
  • Sergeant Robert Vallor, Seattle Police Departmen
  • Detective Rolf Norton; Seattle Police Department
  • Officer Benjamin Kelly, Seattle Police Department

The ceremony is coordinated by the Washington State Law Enforcement Medal of Honor Committee and the Behind the Badge Foundation.
