FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Home remodeler is latest to settle in Attorney General’s ongoing campaign to clean up industry sales practices

SPOKANE –California-based K-Designers is the latest exterior home remodeler to be called out by the Washington Attorney General’s Office for allegedly misleading customers to make quick sales.

“Misleading sales tactics somehow became the accepted way to do business among many companies that sell vinyl siding and windows,” said Assistant Attorney General Jack Zurlini. “We believe K-Designers adopted those practices to convince customers to make immediate purchases.”

Judson Enterprises, registered in Montana, does business as K-Designers and sells vinyl siding, replacement windows, doors and other services. The company, which describes itself as “America’s Premier Home Remodeling Company” has headquarters in Gold River, Calif., and does business in 18 Western states.

The Attorney General’s Office accused K-Designers of misleading consumers into believing that they  received special discounts or won nonexistent contests, and of failing to notify customers of their cancellation rights. The company was also accused of making unsubstantiated and false claims about energy savings and using purported testimonials to suggest its products and services reduced energy bills or increased their home values beyond what its customers typically achieved.

The company agrees to restrictions on its marketing practices and to reimburse the state $70,000 for investigative and legal costs. A $50,000 civil penalty was suspended provided the company complies with all conditions of the settlement. As is typical with such settlements, the agreement does not require K-Designers to admit any wrongdoing.

Zurlini, who lead the case, has negotiated similar settlements with eight other companies since fall 2009.
