OLYMPIA - February 27, 1998 - State Attorney General Christine Gregoire today announced a $430,000 settlement stemming from multiple campaign finance charges brought against the Washington Education Association.

Under the settlement agreement, WEA will return to its 65,000 members approximately $330,000 for Community Outreach Program dues that the suit alleged were improperly collected and expended for campaign contributions. An $80,000 penalty and $20,000 in costs and attorney fees incurred by the state during the investigation will also be paid.

OLYMPIA - Attorney General Rob McKenna today joined attorneys general across the country in an amicus curiae—or friend-of-the-court—brief to the U.S. Supreme Court supporting a qualified reporter’s privilege to refuse to disclose confidential news sources.

February 12, 1997 - OLYMPIA--The State Attorney General's Office filed suit today against the Washington Education Association alleging multiple violations of Initiative 134, the state's campaign finance law.

"Our investigation shows the WEA clearly failed to provide important campaign finance information that the public had a right to know," said State Attorney General Christine Gregoire. "This suit seeks to enforce the law and bring WEA into compliance."

Seattle – Oct. 5, 2001 - An Olympia man who used the Internet to promote an alternative cancer treatment with a purported 95 percent success rate has been sued by Attorney General Christine Gregoire for allegedly engaging in deceptive practices.

In a complaint filed in Thurston County Superior Court, attorneys with Gregoire’s High Tech Unit accused David L. Walker and his company, DLW Consulting, Inc., of numerous violations of the state’s Consumer Protection Act, including:

OLYMPIA - A Thurston County Superior Court judge today ordered an Olympia man to permanently shut down an Internet website he used to promote a cancer treatment with no proven record of success.

Judge Thomas McPhee also ordered David L. Walker, owner and operator of DLW Consulting, to pay attorney fees and make $230,000 in restitution to 127 consumers nationwide who purchased his treatment.

Attorney General Christine Gregoire's High-Tech unit filed a consumer protection lawsuit against Walker last October.

SEATTLE - May, 1, 1998 --Today, the Shell Oil Company announced that it plans to sell its Anacortes refinery to the Tesoro Petroleum Corporation, which supplies gas to approximately 30 retail locations in Southwestern Washington and Oregon and owns refineries in Alaska and Hawaii.
