The Washington State University (WSU) Division provides a full range of legal services to WSU, the state’s land grant university. The division is comprised of six attorneys and three professional staff and is based in Pullman. WSU is a complex client with campuses in Everett, Pullman, Spokane, the Tri-Cities, and Vancouver as well as an online (Global) campus. WSU also maintains agricultural research operations statewide and extension field offices in every county in the state. WSU enrolls approximately 30,000 students and has more than 12,000 employees.
Division attorneys act as general counsel for WSU and provide advice and representation on a host of legal issues, many of which are unique to an academic environment, including: federal and state regulatory compliance; public records; healthcare; discrimination; real estate; research; intellectual property; statewide Extension operations (including 4-H programs); intercollegiate athletics; student affairs; personnel and employment law; development/fund-raising; taxation; constitutional law; public contracting; animal law; and construction. Division attorneys also represent WSU in administrative hearings and in non-tort related litigation.
WSU is a large, complex client that has significant national and international interests and a diverse student body. Major issues routinely consist of Constitutional questions, national and international research concerns, health care issues, major business and real estate developments, and personnel and student matters. The division also devotes as much time as possible to proactive legal advice and training.
