Office of the Attorney General

Attorney General

Bob Ferguson

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Olympia -March 17, 2000- The Attorney General’s Office today filed a formal notice appealing the March 14 ruling that declared Initiative 695 unconstitutional.

The notice seeks to bypass the Washington Court of Appeals and have the Washington Supreme Court review the decision directly. Oral arguments before the Supreme Court are now expected at the end of June.

On March 14, King County Superior Court Judge Robert H. Alsdorf ruled that I-695 violated several provisions of the state’s Constitution. Legal challenges to the Initiative were filed by various local governments, utilities, a transit workers’ union and a community council.

The Attorney General’s Office is defending the Initiative. Under state law, the Attorney General is responsible for defending all legislation passed by the Legislature and initiatives passed by the people.
