They claim your cash will help the homeless or support employment for those with disabilities. But state officials and consumer advocates are warning residents not to be misled by these sales calls.

SEATTLE – Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna and Secretary of State Sam Reed are slinging their pistols – figuratively speaking -- at lawless “badge charities.” The state officials joined the Federal Trade Commission, state enforcement agencies and AARP Washington in announcing a nationwide crackdown on fraudulent charitable solicitors claiming to help police, firefighters and veterans.

SEATTLE – The Attorney General’s Office announced a settlement today with an Everett man accused of violating the state’s charity laws by improperly soliciting donations. Darin Anthony Dewitt agreed to refund consumers who made donations to Blind Children Services of Puget Sound, which he owned.
